Reflections on the Journey 2 Unity Project and the Our Immigrant Stories Event
By Zipporah R., Arts Street@YEA youth intern/artist
Over the summer I had a lot of fun learning about podcasts, creating art to tell our story and helping to create and organize the Unity Community Jam celebration in Globeville. I never would have imagined how different and powerful people’s stories could be—it was an amazing, eye-opening experience.
This fall, a few interns from the summer and I had the opportunity to return to Arts Street once again. We worked on projects such as creating festive paintings, having a photoshoot at the Sun Valley mural, and more. An important project we worked on was showcasing our summer projects at an event called Our Immigrant Stories, which was held at the McNichols building in Civic Center Park. We hung up our narrative flags and exhibited our word sculptures. We also had our website (Journey2Unity.weebly.com) on a display monitor so that people could go through and listen to our podcasts and see all that we had done over the summer in the Globeville and Sun Valley neighborhoods. On another monitor, the video My Immigrant Story: A Year Long Journey of Shared Stories (YouTube video), played and showed visitors how important immigrant residents are to our culture. We were proud to have played a part in this video by learning how to interview and set up a professional interview session.
The event also highlighted large photographs of immigrant residents along with their biographies. There were photo backdrops where people took pictures in front of Denver landmarks such as Union Station and the big blue bear at the Convention Center. People getting their pictures taken could hold our custom-made word sculptures that were created for our summer theme of immigrants and refugees.
During the event, three of the summer interns, including myself gave short speeches that reflected on the summer project and how it impacted us. Overall, the event was amazing and very exciting. The Mayor even came by and gave a speech about the importance of welcoming immigrant residents to Denver. Everyone had a blast and enjoyed learning about our Journey 2 Unity project. I am glad so many people were able to witness the finale of what we, the Art Street interns, had proudly accomplished.
